NorthPoint shuts down network
By Emily Bourne, Total Telecom

30 March 2001

Bankrupt DSL provider NorthPoint Communications said it has been forced to close down its network. Having failed to secure enough interim funding to migrate customers to other networks, “NorthPoint is taking immediate steps to take down service,” the company said in a statement.

Customers must expect “network outages and termination of DSL services immediately,” it added.

Emeryville, California-based NorthPoint has been operating under bankruptcy protection since January; AT&T agreed last week to buy its physical assets. However, this does not include the subscriber portion of the business.

NorthPoint has around 100,000 business and ISP customers, which in turn provide DSL connections to about 500,000 corporate and residential end-users, according to The Wall Street Journal.
