Dyer: Possible target for Manchester United

Old Trafford chief Peter Kenyon last night dismissed talk of an intended £60million investment in players as ‘pretty exaggerated’.

Kenyon said: ‘We will always balance the books. We have provided the money when it’s for the right reasons. What we'll never do is splash it about all over the place. There will be financial guidelines and limits.'

Apart from PSV Eindhoven's £18m striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ferguson also wants the versatile Kieron Dyer. With Leeds as rivals for Dyer, and Newcastle reluctant to part, the price is likely to be a minimum of £15m.

The United boss also wants a world-class defender. He is a confirmed admirer of French World Cup winner Lilian Thuram, who plays for Parma, although a late move to snatch Sol Campbell, who will be out of contract with Tottenham this summer, cannot be ruled out
