The Journal of Sam Gamgee

Now that I have learned my letters, not putting them to
some
use would be a shame. I have therefore decided to keep
a
journal, recording the events of our adventures.
Starting at the
beginning always seems best, so here are my thoughts on

the events that have led us here.

I guess it was about a dozen and a half years ago that
old
Bilbo Baggins and his heir Frodo celebrated their
eleventy-first and thirty-third anniversary
(respectively) by
giving a party, inviting just about everybody. Of
course it was a
great feast - the food, the fireworks and other
entertainments -
everything went splendidly.

But Bilbo played a joke on them all and disappeared in
a
bright flash at the end of a farewell speech, never to
be seen
again in the Shire. Frodo took over at Bag End and
lived there
peacefully enough for years and years, until Gandalf
told him
about the evil nature of the ring that Bilbo used to
make
himself invisible at that party, before leaving it to
Frodo. I know
about this secret conversation of theirs, for I was
listening at
the window, as they indeed discovered.

My, my! that was just about the most frightening
experience
I’ve ever had! Gandalf hauling me up by the ear,
looking at me
with those deep, intense eyes under those bushy
eyebrows,
looking at me like he could see right through me. I
thought
he’d turn me into a toad or worse for spying on them,
and I
didn’t even understand most of what they were talking
about.
Sure, there was some frightening stuff there, about the
Enemy
and Mordor and ringwraiths and Gollum and such nasty
things, but they also talked about hereoes and
adventures
and magic and what I loved most to hear - elves!

I have always had a desire to see elves. Bilbo used to
tell
stories of them, but I’ve never seen one. Well, once,
maybe - I
can’t really be sure - but I’ve never had a proper
look. If the
stories are to be trusted they are tall and graceful
creatures of
magical properties, slender, fleet of foot and so
gracefully
beautiful in movement and wisdom.

And what do you know! they didn’t punish me at all! In
fact they
said I could accompany Mr. Frodo on his trip. I will
have my
heart’s desire fulfilled. I am going to see elves! I
feel ready to
face any danger to realise this dream, as long as my
stomach
is satisfied and my limbs are still working. Watch out,
rest of
the world! Here comes Sam Gamgee!

We’ll be setting out in a couple of days. I will tell
you some
more, when there’s more to be told.
