Dave Grohl lærði að spila á trommur með stól sem hi-hat og kodda á gólfinu sem snare drumbið. Hann átti eldgamlann plötuspilara sem mamma hans sem var kennari kom með heim úr skólanum. Dave setti hljómsveitir eins og Minor Threat og Bad Brains á fóninn og spilaði með þeim í bakrunni. Dave átti það til að spila þangað til að gluggarnir voru allir í móðu af svita.

Í miðskóla spilaði Dave með nokkrum hljómsveitum eins og Dain Bramage,Freak baby og Mission impossible. Seinna byrjaði Dave að spila með hljómsveit að nafni Scream, sem hann segir ein af hans uppáhalds hljómsveitum. Hann spilaði með Scream þangað til að hún hætti árið 1990, en hann hafði hætti í miðskóla þegar hann var 17 ára til þess að ferðast full time. Í september 1990 flutti Dave til Seattle og kynntist þar Krist Novoselic og Kurt Cobain. Eins og kunnugt er þá byrjaði Dave í hljómsveitinni þeirra, Nirvana, þar sem hann tók við af trommuleikaranum Chad Channing.

Dave hafði verið að semja lög en komst fljótt að því að það var ekkert pláss fyrir hans lög í nýju hljómsveitinni. Dave var í Nirvana þangað til að Kurt Cobain framdi sjálfsmorð í apríl 1994.

Sorgmæddur og niðurdreginn hélt Dave að hann myndi aldrei framar koma nálægt tónlist, en eftir símtal frá hljómsveit sem höfðu lent í því sama ákvað hann að taka upp lögin sem hann hafði samið á meðan hann var í Nirvana.

Dave tók upp fyrstu plötu Foo fighters á sex dögum, hann spilaði á öll hljóðfæri sjálfur og söng, nema eitt gítarsóló sem vinur hans Greg Dulli tók. Á þeirri plötu voru lög eins og Big me og I'll stick around.

Foo fighters gáfu síðan út plötuna The colour and the shape sem innihélt lög eins og Monkey wrench,walking after you og My hero. Eftir þeirri plötu kom út There's nothing left to lose, sem mér finnst lélegasta platan en hún innihélt lög eins og Breakout, Next year og Learn to fly. Núna nýlega var að koma út nýjasta plata þeirra drengja og hún heitir One by one á henni eru m.a lögin All my life og nú nýjasta Times like these.
