“My first impression was that the world graphics are decent enough. The ground, trees, paths, water.. all designed and placed well. I ran for great distances to explore the terrain and found that it changed like it should, and felt much like a real world and not fake like some games.

I could climb any hill for example, and generally didn't feel boxed in at all. So this part of the game was impressive to me. The environmental sounds were also good enough as well. The sunrise was simply stunning, gorgeous. Clouds and night sky looked good as well. I did not notice any weather like raining, but, it may be either very rare or not turned on yet. Generally it did feel pretty empty though. There are camps of monsters to be found here and there. There are also animations of small birds in the distance.. So this empty feeling may have just been from so few players being around.

The Character models looked ok from the close in 3rd person weapon drawn perspective. Not great, but ok for a PvP game. They looked a bit better while looking at another person on the screen, or while viewing your character while resting. Armor looks good as well. Aflar's glowing eyes look excellent. The buildings and cities look well designed and are functional. I could not find any doors to open, but it felt natural enough with archways and open doorways. NPCs are functional but sparse.

I expected the interface to be horrible, but found it was very simple and easy to understand. It is like a nicer UO interface that could use a bunch of work, it is very crude I admit, but it is functional. The biggest problem is that there are lots of things they say are not turned on yet. I have no idea if they just have to turn these things on or if they have to create them still, but I hope it is as they say.

As for bugs, there are a few, but less than I normally see in betas. The stability is pretty much perfect or better than most released MMORPGs. At least with the small amount of players on now. This is the most shocking thing for me. I expected Darkfall.exe crashes, yet the game just doesn't crash. I could also alt-tab just fine, and generally it just works really well.

Melee combat feels like you are just trading blows. Back and forth. What can you say? They need to work on it and tweak it some. Jumping does not really matter much with melee combat, it might with avoiding AOE spells aimed at the ground though, in theory. Sprinting is very cool because you can sprint for a very long time. You also skill up with it.

You can sprint and fight at the same time as well.. If you run out of stamina you are doomed.. Ranged combat is amazing on the other hand. Just great as it is. It is however very difficult to change weapons rapidly and switch between modes, unless I am missing something, which is possible.

As for the feel of the world, it feels very dangerous, it feels more like a world or a sim than just a game. There is also a sense of equality right away with other players.

Without levels it does feel like you matter from the start. While the skills still give a variety of things to work on and improve. So I think it can be a game for casual or hardcore players, provided they are seeking the most harsh environment possible while playing. The main point is that you don't have to grind for months to make a difference, but everything is going to be deadly hard right away, and stay that way. This part of the game just feels right to me.

As for the difficulty in general, it is simply very hard. The monsters alone are enough of a challenge, to say the least. They group, run away, attack you at extreme distances, you name it. I think they might need some easier mobs for players to start with, but with enough tactics you can kill these initial monsters.

Finally, it is hard to say how the game will be at release or to give a complete review with so many things turned off or not finished, but Darkfall certainly has a great amount of potential for PvPers seeking a harsh and deadly world. The game clearly needs work and some tweaks, but it does offer what they promised and what many of us have been waiting for. Darkfall is a dark world of harsh consequences. There is no denying that.”

“Leaker rates darkfall….subjectively? 08/01/09

I want to remind everyone that nothing is set in stone at the moment. These only subjective ratings. Also he inst rating combat…he is rating combat sounds. At first glance i was mistaken to.

Some subjective ratings and thoughts on the different aspects of Darkfall.

Environmental Sounds 8/10
Music 6/10 - because there is only one song that I have heard, but it is ok.
Melee Combat Sounds 3/10 - very limited and repetitive - perhaps temporary?
Archery Combat Sounds 6/10
Magic Combat Sounds 7/10
World Graphics 8/10 - Trees, grass, clouds, mountains, and so on.
World Design 10/10 - Best world design of any MMORPG - explored quite a bit.
Character Models 5/10
Animations 3/10 - Pretty much like EQ. The game runs fast though.
Monster Models 7/10 - Creative so I think it deservers higher than a 6, and there is a variety of monsters out there.
City Design & Graphics 8/10 - Varies .
Outdoor Static Camps 10/10 - Very well laid out and feels realistic, not repetitive. Makes exploring fun. The AI helps.
Monster AI 9/10

As for the stuff they are adding in it is still in process so there isn't much to talk about in that regard. Dungeons are in but they are being populated still, I think, maybe some are complete? Lots of outdoors areas to explore.

First Person works great. A good reason to use it in general is so you can run up and loot faster, or interact with NPCs faster.
It's a personal opinion from a leaker.
This is not mine, nor did I post it on the internet as the first person.”

There are more stats for weapons and armor after I double checked, so I made some errors. You can run in windowed mode. You can easily switch weapons and modes with the hot key bars. They tweaked some things and have improved it I think.

They have added in a bit more content as well and the game is starting to get pretty addictive. So I will give it an 8/10 right now and would rate it higher once it is complete. I will be buying and playing it for sure.”

Weapons and stances change very fast and you can mix combat easily. Providing you think and react fast enough.

As for melee combat, it is fine really. I notice people are going insane on the main forums about it. It is the most complex and involved of any major MMORPG, so it is good enough in my opinion. If you have been following Darkfall forever I am sure you will like it just fine. Ranged combat is just much harder to deal with on offense and actually hit someone, so I think it takes more skill initially. When you are close in it is much easier to hit people. The melee speed is closest to Oblivion, again, so it is not as fast close in as most FPS. It still gives plenty of challenge, and is by far not my biggest concern with Darkfall. My biggest concern would be them finishing the game, and the game simply being way too hard for the vast majority of players who are not hardcore Darkfall fans. Still, I think this also is what makes Darkfall special and unique. Time will tell how it plays out.

Q&A with a leaker!

”Collision detection sounds like an annoyance if used in hubs to block entrances and such.“
Not really. Most entrances are fairly large and vendors are all outside, or in the open near a building or tent. The places you could block people off are also the places the person doing the blocking could just be killed. It also feels good to trap people, and scary to get trapped. They did a good job with it and it fits with how the world is entirely realistic.

”You've mentioned melee alot, but how does it pan out against magic and ranged (bow) PvP? Is it hard to coordinate attacks with more people?“
It can certainly be confusing. I suggest a voice chat program, but that is pretty obvious. There are no names over people's heads like most games as you likely know. Since you have to mouse over, it just looks like a bunch of people running around. So you have to be careful with who you are hitting. I imagine the more people out there the more challenging this will be.
I think bow PvP takes the most skill and is the hardest to determine the attacker with if they are attacking you. If you start getting hit with arrows they stick into you, so you try to look over where they are coming from, by then, usually a couple more are in you. While Magic glows and is pretty noisy, so it is easier to react quicker to it and find cover.
Magic and Archery takes arrows and components to use, so that balances it some as well. Melee weapons even wear out, but very slowly, and I think everyone will have some melee as a backup.
For an individual I suggest picking one of the main three melee weapons and skilling up with it. There will be times when you just have your no drop weapon, so you might as well be good with it. You can change stances fast, magic to melee, and most people will use all kinds of skills.

”Can you give examples of what can be harvested and a simple crafting recipe (like a sword)?“
No sorry. Not much of a crafter. I suspect everyone will be a bit of a gatherer even if they are not a crafter though. I also believe the reports of almost everything you see potentially being crafted is possible, but I do not know if that is implemented yet or not.

”Nice that they stuck to what they planned with NPCs dropping sensible stuff, it must have been very boring to itemize though!“
That is one of the coolest things about Darkfall. I often just think, ‘how would that work if this were a real world’, and many times that is how it works in Darkfall. Makes the world feel more real.
Answers a bit of our questions… But not a lot of new info

More Q&A leaker stuff!
Great

”Which race is your favorite so far, and why?“
Alfar are nice because of the faction issue. Dwarves have the best starting areas. Mahirim have nice starting areas and actully look better than screenshots, but do not run on all fours and I will be amazed if they do by release.

”What is, DF's strongest/best point, and why?“
Best world of any MMORPG. The Combat and Monster AI. FFA and full loot. Stability. Hard to pick just one of those. It is a combination of them that is the strongest point.

”And what's the worst thing in DF so far, and why?“
Incomplete or not turned on. Very crude interface. Lack of polish with some things. Some of the graphics and sounds.

”Are player houses in?“
Not that I know of.

”Are mounted combat in or have you seen or heard of it?“
Not that I know of, but it could be. Coming soon?

”Do you know anything about Necromancy?“
There are some spells for it, but I have not used them. What you would expect. Draining health instant ray, debuffs, bolts. No pets.
Some more Q&A's” “

” More leaks than an Iraqi Oil Pipe
Please note that the authenticity of this leak has not been confirmed, please read with a pinch of salt -

Here is my leak:

Hello.

First of all i realise this might not be new exiting information, but i would like to leak this anyway.
I have been in the beta a few days now, and i have had time to build up a impression of the game.

First of all the general gameplay and such is working pretty good. The basics of the game is ready for release in my opinion. The combat feels pretty good, and it absolutely something new. I feel that thenoobs preview comments regarding the pace and feeling if the combat system is pretty accurate. The skill systems seems to be working nicely aswell, but i have not tested it a lot since they have a lot of character wipes and i have spent my time doing other stuff. Again I think thenoob has covered this in a good way.
The world is huge and beautiful, and i in particular liked the Ork starting area. I have always been an explorer, i like to go around and climb mountains, cross huge plains, go into deep forests and such. Now this part of Darkfall fit me extremely good. I spent hours just running around exploring the world. The way the world is built is fantastic. The best part was when i suddenly bumped into a hidden cavern on a small island, it was incredibly well made and the visuals was stunning. It felt like a place where no man had been before. This is a feeling i have not had in any other MMO before (i guess the closest is AC, but darksfalls graphics makes much more special), and it feels awesome to finally feel this free and being able to explore a huge seamless world. Explorers, you will love it!

Now there still is some bugs, but some are rather minor. What worries me the most is that many of the key features of the game is not turned on and has not ben tested. Sieges, Ships and such is probably some of the most important features in the game, but we have had no way to test it yet. This makes me wonder how ready the game really is, and I kinda wish they will push the game a bit more back for more testing with a larger number of testers. They might be holding this back because they know it is ready, but i doubt it. If this is not working, i kinda hope they will postphone the release a bit.

That is all i have for now. Hope it is somewhat informative.

Regards TheExplorer.“

And Another -

- Silvertown, a neutral city found in the land of the humans.
- I like the PvP in Darkfall alot, it is very intense. You have to aim everything, nothing is automated.
- Takes a (long) time to get used to the UI. I hated it at first, but now when iam used to it it rawks.
- ”What you see is what you get“. You see a mob with a pair of boots, it will drop boots.
- Challenging gameplay (mobs move around, forcing you to adjust your strategy)
- Collision detection. You can box players/mobs etc…
- Spells, food, potions heal hit points.

And some more -

Here is some more information for those who are curious.

With starter weapons and skills it seems to take around 12-20 hits to kill someone in PvP on average. This varies of course, but that should give you an idea of timing. Swings are about once a second, and I assume may vary depending on weapon speed, but I am not positive. You can also sprint while swinging and attacking to increase your movement rate or to chase people down, and you can box people into corners or against rocks and such, as reported. Collision detection works great.

Harvesting resources appear static and replenish over time. Larger and smaller resources appear to have the same amount of yield from what I can tell. Common ones are all over the place and yield around 10-20 items each, with a couple different item types coming from the same resource. There are also rare things to harvest in harder to reach locations. Resources, once harvested, also have a small amount of sales value unlike some games. So you can sell them to purchase whatever you like.

So you could be a crafter that chooses not to fight monsters. You could gain your combat and magic skills just through PvP. You could even run off in the wilderness and avoid almost all the people and be a hermit. So it is very open ended like they claimed.

What you see is what you get is also certainly true. You see a monster you think has nothing on it, it likely does not, other than what you can harvest. If it is wearing or holding something, it drops it. For example, you want to be a mage? Kill a caster mob and take their staff. Same goes for archery and so on.

”Since couple of years there were few things that I was wondering of about the game. Most of them have been answered, but there is still one left, which I think is very important for this game to be success in long time term.It is about resurrection system, running back to place where you died, so also bindstones placement. The question is how troublesome is dying, more specific continuing journey at moment you died. For example, you want to kill some monsters far away at enemy teritory. You go at their living area, engage the battle and lose to them. They drop some needed items and you want to try slaying them one more time. Are bindstones set on the map frequently enough for returning to place you died not to be boring and frustrating? Or returning back to friends, which you are playing with, after some pvp fight?“

Boring and frustrating is very subjective. So what I will tell you is just the facts regarding bindstones. Bindstones are extremely rare. Capital cities, a few Chaos stones hidden here and there that I am keeping the locations to myself, and then guild cities and hamlets once built. You cant just find one of these and bind at it when it is unclaimed either. The world is also very unknown, so mapping it out is something individuals or guilds will have to do initially.

I don't have a problem with it since it stops zerging, and zerging is a bigger problem. The world is also nice and it isn't as bad travelling through it.

”necromancy sounds kinda vanilla…oh well“

Magic in general is that way. Even though magic is vanilla on paper, it is, the differernce is the way the magic is done. When you are using a normal boring spell in regular game it is far less interesting than in darkfall. The spells for the most part are what you have seen before, they just require player skill and it feels very different to use them when you are aiming and leading targets.

”To what extent do you need to focus on one speciality (spell school, ranged, melee etc)? How much can you be the jack of all trades? I know you're meant to have a bit of a few things to stay versatile, but to what degree do you specialise, and how much does this affect your stats/hp/armour worn?“

Initially you can be a jack of all trades. Not sure how much it narrows down long term.

”Do you know whether poisons are in at the moment please? (Either craftable or bought from NPCs/looted) And if so can they be applied to arrows or daggers only, or other weapons too?“

I do not know one way or the other.

”How about your pvp experiences? Tell us some stories on your ninja pk's.“

It is exciting and the best way to get people is when they are fighting or afk, obviously. Resting, they usually see you and can try to run away. I don't want to get specific with exact experiences as there are only a few hundred testers. That is why I am only sharing personal experiences and being fairly general about them.

”How often do you run into people out in the world map, seeing as how big it is and there is only 2k(?) or so Beta players at the moment? What is the % rate of those you run into attempting to pk you/you pk them?"

If there are thousands of beta testers then they are still downloading the client or staying very quiet and hidden in the game. I do see people near captial cities now and then.

Very few try to pk me because I am very careful, and because of the low population. Sounds do carry for hundreds of yards as well, as reported, so you can hear people fighting way off in the distance and find them. I know the range of sounds and plan accordingly when hunting.
