Dnl's Philosophy

DnL is a new breed of MMORPG. A world where you can be more than a just fighter or a mage, more even than a simple blacksmith or merchant. DnL gives you the frame to be what you want from adventurer to socialite, magic user to a politician, good or evil, all in a world that brings new meaning to Massive. Read about the DnL dream:

ITW: When you speak of “ Massively Multiplayer ” games, how manyPeople can evolve in this world?

Stéphane: We don't have any theoretical limits, but say the technology that we developed allow us to accept several tens of thousands of players simultaneously on our main server. Everyone will meet to play in just one world, no more: “I play the same game as you but I will never be able to meet you in this game.”

ITW:That is indeed a lot of people. Won't it be too crowded?

Stéphane: I doubt it! We have in that direction created a technology that allows us create a virtually unlimited area to explore. On the other hand we have voluntarily ‘tightened’ the land of DnL to 40 000 km² (almost 10,000,000 acres, 15,000 square miles!) so that our players can interact easily between themselves. Our methods allow
us to quickly create new land with a quality never before seen.

ITW: Wow or Woah! 40 000km² That's huge!

Stéphane: Indeed, especially as these 40 000 km² are in just one zone, but that's not the right term because there is no notion of ‘zone’ in our game….
That is to say that players don't have to download parts of the world time and time again…. the game wins in fluidity and realism… Our horizon is always real!

ITW: That makes a lot to explore and find.

Stéphane: Discovery is in fact one important aspect of DnL. We are aware that the players like to discover as well as to advance their character… With DnL they will have plenty to do in both directions.

ITW: Speaking of the game itself, what is a typical day for a DnL player?

Stéphane: There is no typical day in DnL; it all depends on how you chose to live each day! Say you just want to be contemplative; O.K go to the look- out over your village and enjoy the magnificent sunset with your friends, or if you want to conquer another fortress for your kingdom, so be it just hire some mercenaries to assist you in your quest.. The beginner (newbie): First Discovers at his village, and follows an initiation course with different
NPC (Non Playing Character) Masters that helps him understand the basics of the game. They will learn the different options that are going to shape their final choice of character before they start to discover the other kingdoms. During the initiation period, they are not in contact with the opposite alignment, but with players of higher-level from their own faction with whom there is no risk.

At the highest-level, DnL sets in motion a system of fights between players (PvP) in addition to hunting and fighting with the hostile creatures of the world.

ITW: The player is then prepared by his side to face the opposite alignment.

How many alignments have you in the game?

Stéphane: In DnL there are two main alignments the Dark and the Light, but be careful not to believe that the Dark are the foes and the Light the friends.

To understand it well you need to read the Mythology; it explains the birth of the conflict between the two alignments.

ITW: What separates them, what is their ultimate goal?

Stéphane: DnL is a struggle of influence on several levels: Magic, territory and politics. But our world is vast enough that players hungry for adventure can be far from the cities' politics preoccupations;

Players are free to be who they want and discover every aspect of DnL.

ITW: So you have to do more than just fight to reach the highest level in the game?

Stéphane: You are right, a player always progresses in two directions in DnL, fighting and socializing. The progression bars are represented by a unique two dimensional system.

A player who doesn't like to fight a lot, can progress in DnL by other means, without focusing on fighting. He can become very influential by way of trading, by his profession but also through politics and the way he manages his domain.
For example, he could finance bands of mercenaries to storm local strongholds to claim as his own and become a Lord of the game. Of course to do so it will be necessary for him to possess a title of nobility For the region he wishes to rule and call his own.

The more a player develops their social and political standing, the more he goes up in nobility, but be wary of nobles with the right to rule, but no domain to rule over…

ITW: Without naming any rivals (in the online game circle), what's different about DnL?

Stéphane: Our terrain engine brings an exceptional plus to the discovery of our huge open space. But the most interesting innovation is the fact that we are able to propose a game with collaboration between players motivated by the joys of PvP and hunting and those motivated by the social and strategic. Both with the same goal in mind: the supremacy of their alignment! The ability to have so many players in the same world enables us to obtain a richer game with a multitude of different possibilities . It especially allows us to give the player a rich and complex influence system. Systematically killing beasts is not enough to reach the higher-levels of the game. Reaching the most elevated level is not one end in itself in DnL, but the beginning of a player's freedom. After reaching the highest-levels of the game, the player is no longer ‘subject’ to the rules of the game, to a certain extent he can make the rules.

ITW: It's close to the traditional role playing game?

Stéphane: We made the game very rich, but we also envisioned ‘animators’, the equivalent of game masters, to create adventures… It's the quality of the game masters that will give the feeling of atraditional role playing game.

ITW: When will players reach the limits of the game?

Stéphane: Why would it be necessary to have a notion of limit? Life is a day to day adventure, from the most modest to the most powerful one! In DnL it's the same thing.

The fights, the diplomacy and the professions give the players the tools to express themselves as ‘animators’ in their own region. But when they reach the highest-levels, they will always have the possibility of defending the interests of their alignment.

ITW: Thank you Stéphane for these explanations.

Stéphane: I hope I have been short enough; a reminder to everybody: The FAQ answers a lot of specific questions and we often update them.
