Jesus Christ Bobby
(Smekkleysa SM88CD)

KKKKK

Brutal, brilliant new hardcore from Iceland. THAT ICELAND even has a home-grown hardcore scene is amazing enough. That the island that has only ever given us Bjork and, um, geysers, can produce a band as so f**king intense and brutal as Minus makes you love them all the more.

This, their second album after forming ? unbelievably - for a battle of the bands competition in 1998, Minus' ‘Jesus Christ Bobby’ is a near perfect exercise in hardcore as it enters its third decade as a genre in it's own right. Forget the macho bollocks of the orthodox NYC hardcore crews or the sparse fragility and general whininess of emo ? this is music that treads new ground and takes no prisoners along the way.

As crushing as Will Haven and as livid and diverse as Refused's recent modern classic ‘The Shape Of Punk To Come’, Minus grind, swerve and burns with some of the best new hardcore this side of Drowningman. The song titles alone hint at the often abstract, tumultuous squall and the general sense of paranoia on offer here ? ‘Electra Complex’, ‘Liquid Courage’ and the misleadingly titled ‘Frat Rock’ will all knock the wind out of anyone's sails.

Most promisingly Minus are forward-thinking enough to take in the best of all that's good with metal right now ? a sprinkle of Deftones-ish guitars, the fury of At The Drive-In, a twist of technology, an open mind - and execute it with pure f**king rage and a million and one ideas. Bizarrely there is even a straight forward acoustic moments for those who need to take a breather from destroying the room when they hear this.

It's when you realise that obscure Icelandic ‘electronoise soundscaper’ Curver and one-time Bjork collaborator Einar Orn are involved in the production of this record that it makes even less sense. No matter. It rocks. Claiming to be wholly concerned with the beauty of chaos, it's only a matter of time before Minus crossover and the kick the lazy asses of all those hardcore bands stuck in the same rut.

A must-have for anyone who likes it furious.
