Horace Ward Martin Tavares Silver fæddist 2. september 1928 í Norwalk, Connecticut Bandaríkjunum. Silver kynntist tónlist fyrst í uppáhaldshljómsveit föður hans, þjóðlaga bandinu The Cape Verdean. Eftir að Silver byrjaði að spila á pianó og sax seint á háskóla aldrinum voru vinsælir “Boogie-Woogie” píanistar og bop-leikarar eins og Thelonius Monk og Bud Powell. Maðurinn sem er að þakka hans ferill að mestu leiti er Stan Getz. Saxafón-leikarinn Stan Getz spilaði á tónleikum í Hartford, Connecticut en vantaði meðspilara, svo hann réð þá sem næstir voru, Silver á píanó, Walter Bolden, trommur og Joe Calloway á bassa. Eftir tónleikana var Getz svo ánægður að hann réð allt tríóið á tónleikaferðalag sitt um Bandaríkin. Eftir þetta samstarf við Getz voru allar götur opnar Silver. Hann spilaði víðsvegar um ríkið með topp-spilurum á borð við Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young og Oscar Pettiford. 1952 spilaði Horace Silver og tók upp plötu með saxafónleikaranum Lou Donaldson fyrir Blue Note labelið, og 53 sameinaðist hann og Art Blackey og gáfu út plötuna Horace Silver and The Jazz Messengers. Lögin The Preacher, Doodlin og Room 608 sem Silver samdi voru eflaust fyrstu lögin hans sem urðu klassísk.
