PERU, Ind. – A man who slept on a couch as his infant son was mauled by the family's pit bull has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Brad Williamson received a 10-year sentence Monday, but Miami Superior Court Judge Dan Banina suspended four years and ordered Williamson to serve three years in a state prison.

He also ordered Williamson to serve the remaining three years on in-home detention and serve four years of probation, ordered him to keep his home clean and to not keep any pets there without court approval.

“This dog was a loaded gun waiting to go off, and he was vicious. I don't care what anyone else says about that,” Banina said.

D.J. Bolinger, Williamson's attorney, called more than 10 witnesses to testify that Williamson has not drunk alcohol since that day in April 2000 when his 9-week-old son, Alex, was mauled.

Deputy Prosecutor Ron Byal asked for the maximum 10-year sentence.

“You need to send a message to the people who own these dogs that they are accountable and responsible for their actions,” Byal told Banina.

Bolinger asked the judge to not make the child a victim again by sending his father away to prison.

The child was hospitalized for about two weeks and has returned home to his parents' care. Doctors won't know the long-term effects of his injuries until he is older.
