Albert was the youngest of five children born on a ranch in Texas. By age five he had still not started to talk, and it was finally decided by the family that he was “simple.” One evening when he was eleven and having dinner with his family, he looked up from the bowl of soup he'd been eating and said, “Soup's cold.”
Startled, his mother said, “What did you just say?”
“I said, ‘The soup’s cold,'” replied Albert.
“I can't believe this!” said his mother. “All these years we've assumed you were simple. Why have you never spoken before this?”
Albert thought for a moment, then finally said, “Well, up until now I guess everything's been all right.”
