THE FIVE FINGERS

Moshe, a 12-year-old boy with an endless curiosity, asks his father “Why
do we have five fingers?”

Eliezer, Moshe's father, explains. “Well son, we have this finger for
holding things better” he says about the thumb.

“Nu? What about the others?” asks Moshe.

“Well son, God is very smart, and so we have this finger for getting into
small places, which is helpful when you need to clean your ears or your
nose.” he explains about the little ‘pinky’ finger.

“Nu? What about the others?” asks Moshe.

“Well son, God is very smart, and so we have this finger for pointing us
in the right direction, or to the right place on a page” Eliezer explains
about the index finger.

“Nu? What about the others?” asks Moshe.

“Well son, God is very smart, and he knows that one day, you will fall in
love with a woman. And when you do, she will want to marry you. And when
you both decide to marry, you will exchange rings. And so you will put
the ring on this finger” explained Eliezer about the fourth finger.

“Nu? What about the others?” asks Moshe.

“Well son,” started Eliezer again, “God is very smart, and he knows that
one day, you will marry. And when you do, your new wife will come to you
that night, and she will say, ‘Moshe, I want you, I need you, I must have
you. Take me.’ And you are her husband, so you will do as she asks.”

“Nu?”

“Well son,” started Eliezer once more, “After the first time, your new
wife will come to you again that night, and she will again say, ‘Moshe, I
want you, I need you, I must have you. Take me.’ And you are a little
tired, but this is your wedding night, and you are her husband, so you
will do as she asks.”

“Nu?”

“Well son,” started Eliezer yet again, “After the second, third, and
fourth times, your new wife will wake you again that night, and again she
will say, ‘Moshe, I want you, I need you, I must have you. Take me.’ And
you are rather tired now, but this is your wedding night, and you are her
husband, so you will do as she asks.”

“Nu?”

“Well son,” started Eliezer yet again, “After the fifth times, your new
wife will wake you one more time that night, and yes, again she will say,
'Moshe, I want you, I need you, I must have you. Take me.' Now you are
very tired now. So you will take the fifth finger, and put it o your
forehead, twist it back and forth, and ask her ‘What are you, crazy?!’”
Through me is the way to the sorrowful city.
