Ewan langaði að vera leikari vegna þess að frændi hann Denis Lawson var leikari og lék m.a í fyrstu þrem star wars myndunum.
Foreldrar hans James Charles Stuart McGregor og Carole Diane Lawson voru bæði hins vegar kennarar.

Sem barn var Ewan mjög virkur krakki. Hann hafði dálæti á sundi og köfun og lærði á trommur gítar og franskt horn. Hestar voru líka stórt áhugamál hjá honum og hann fékk vinnu í hesthúsi.

Ewan á eldri bróðir sem heitir Colin sem er núna í konunglega flughernum (RAF pilot). Ewan er giftur Eve Mavrakis og þau eiga tvö börn Clara Mathilde og Esther Rose
