Þetta málverk er eftir bandaríska listmálarann Thomas Cole (1801-48), og er týpískt fyrir “rómantíska stílinn” sem þá var alls ráðandi í myndlist.

Þessi mynd er sú fjórða í fimm mynda röð sem kallast gæti á íslensku “Æviskeið heimsveldis”. Hið ónefnda heimsveldi myndanna er fantasíu-kennd blanda af hinum fornu veldum Grikkja og Rómverja, og líklega fleiri eins og t.d. Býzansríkinu.

Það hefur verið tilfellið í mannkynssögunni að heimsveldi líða undir lok, oft hrynja þau undan eigin þunga og/eða sjálfumgleði.

Og við trúum engu síður á að slíkt lögmál gildi en þessi nítjándu aldar listamaður. Enda hafa nú nokkur heimsveldi hrunið eftir hans daga.
