Shop ‘kicked mother out for breast-feeding baby’

A Florida mother says she was kicked out of a shop for breast-feeding her baby.

Shannon Gordon from Port Charlotte says an employee at the Murdock Kmart told her to leave after an elderly couple complained.

A shop spokeswoman says an investigation is under way.

Ms Gordon, 23, said she thinks the shop has violated her civil rights.

Florida law states women can breast-feed children anywhere, even when the mother's breast is visible.

Ms Gordon says she was sitting in the restaurant area and covered herself in a blanket before she started feeding her three-week-old baby.

An elderly man sitting near her said: “I didn't come here for a peepshow,” according to Ms Gordon.

The man and his wife then complained to a member of staff, who told her to leave, she claims.

“She said it would be best if I left,” Ms Gordon said. “She said the couple were Kmart regulars, and the store haven't had a problem with them before.”

Company spokeswoman Susan Dennis said: “We wouldn't ask someone to leave for that reason. We're trying to find out what happened.”

Ms Gordon says she's thinking about contacting a lawyer, the Sun-Herald reports.
