Scene 1. At a disco in London in 1986

Scene 1. act 1.

Dyne [enjoying a lager beside the bar]

“Now has the week of our discontent
Given way to glorius weekend.
And all the blows we have enjured
On our partylonging bodies,
For this short but pleasing night of wonders,
Are to be forgotten and left at the doorsteps
Of anguish and tedius strife.
The darkness and moving multi colored lights
Will inspire us to new and uncharted lands
Of reckless frolicking and fancy fun!
Come companion Vyse and let us drink
And dance instead of cowering in shades and shadows!
Like the earthworm relishing the rain
We shall explore this decadent palace!”

Vyse [enjoying a Subway]

“Truly this moment has been much anticipated
But let us not get too agitated
For not even the bear with its brutish strength
Can match the fox’s sly cunning.
And trickery is what a knave be needing
When it comes to a man’s libido feeding.”

Dyne

“Your words ring true as true could ever be.
But the beat brings my blood to boiling point!
These bones were not made for sitting and chatting
But for moving and breaking to the bassline!
Your heart is set on luring the lasses,
In the place of having a gay old time!”

Vyse

“You break by your heart and the soul within.
Patience is a powerful virtue my brother,
But look now as a friendly fellow draws us near.”

[enter Roland

Roland

“Wassup, my homies, my fools and Londonites!
Have you come here to shake your tailfeather?
To spread your love to the babes and bachelorettes
Like hounds in a hen house looking for feathers
To pluck and wear in your crown as token
To your everlasting boast as the players king?
If the nature of your visit is true to your nature
The house of hens will lose its face
To the cocks of night who ride this bassful wave.”

Vyse

“If I be the cock then you be the chicken.
My garments are flashy and my moves are great,
I surely won’t leave here without a date,
A dame, a damsel, a girl to be,
In my bed ‘till morning
She and I would then debate
If it’s true that you are straight
For I have for fact these days of late,
Roland looks for males as mate,
Or are these lies and scorning?”

Roland

“How these words cut like a switchblade!
How your lies burn like napalm in mine heart!
My anger is a maelstrom aimed to mangle!
To maim! To slay! To utterly destroy!”

Vyse

“Ease the anger of thine heart my friend,
My words were only meant to shake and stir your bosom.
Put away your automatic weapons!
Are you not completely sure of your masculinity?
Come, drink! Mine will be your bugdet of beer tonight!”

Roland

“Your words do soothe the seething urge to fight.”

Dyne

“Then be soothed and let sweet ale heal your wounds.”

[enter Kaleesha on to the dancefloor

Vyse

“What babe is that,
Which doth enrich the hand
Of yonder bartender?”

Dyne

“It be the lady Kaleesha, lady of many loves.
For her loving she doth not spare but spreads,
Like influenza in a childrens garden.”

Vyse

“She doth fire the furnaces of my loins
With flames a-kin to ones in Hell.
I am but an animal, a beast,
And through the junglethrong of the dancingfloor,
I do espy this beautious doe.
The panther moves and lurks in the grass,
To pounce and startle his prey!”

Kaleesha

“Eek! Thou hast startled me dark knight!”

Vyse

“Doth the dark night the maiden startle?
Then Vyse will traverse the velvet darkness in pursuit
Of the dark spring from which this unholy night doth flow.”

Kaleesha

“Your words are smooth as vanilla ice cream,
But they are wasted on some as kinned as I.
Will the penguin fly with the eagle? No, it dares not.
As will I not dare to dance and jam with thee,
For I am someone elses love and fee.”

Vyse

“I have heard they be more than two or three!”

Kaleesha

“True it be, say it more and I’ll meet thee groin with mine knee.”

Vyse

“I see.”

Dyne

“Hark! The Herald Posse approaches!”

[enter Herald Breakdancing Posse

First herald

“Rumtumtum and a yumyumyum,
‘S it true what mine eyes be let on a strum?
A thug and a worm and a breaker to be,
I do not believe what Jah eyes now see!”

Heralds

“Humhumhumhum!”

First herald

“You bust and you break but your moves they don’t take
A single moments practice for a breaker accomplished
Who knows what he’s doing and around has stopped screwing!
I would you a-challenge but I think you would away … cringe.”

Heralds

“Harharharhar!”

Roland

“You break as bad as you rhyme, you scoundrel!
You movestealer and wearer of mullets!
You have performed an illegal operation,
And will be shut down like a faulty laptop!”

Dyne

“A breaker’s brawl draws near,
Pump the music, bomb the bass,
Your challenge is fully accepted!”

Vyse

“To move, to glide, to spin like a dreamer’s heart.
You look to find a challenge?
Couple it with something,
Make it a challenge and a break!”

First Herald

“Then stand by your words, dread skanker!”

[First Herald breakdances whilst other Heralds stand by shouting praises

First Herald

“From tha H to tha E to tha R to tha…”

Vyse

“Me.”

[Vyse breakdances like a whirlwind

First Herald

“O, take mine eyes from this wretched skull of mine,
To touch the mat from you would be an act philistine.
Your mad skillz be more than a match for me.
I quickly surrender the breakers’ throne to thee.
To break, to move, to twirl as fast as you
Is hard for any mortal man to do.
I leave this hall of shame and hang my head,
Heavy is my burden, so heavy and full of dread.
But from all things bad doth good come too,
And practice making perfect speaks now true.
A year from now we’ll meet again dear Vyse,
And truly a skilled opponent on the floor then flies.
Away must I baldhead, back to Jah Jah land.”

Vyse

“You are a man of many words and little skill,
But a diamond can be sharpened with god’s will.”

[exeunt Heralds Rastafarian Breakdancing Crew

Dyne

“Curb your blabbering mouth my friend and look,
Your fiery dancing this maiden’s heart did shook.”

Vyse

“A player plays his field in more then one ways,
All was this but a part in this young lady’s chase.
To woo a girl is a task which comes too easy,
To one as skilled, as fine and darest I say, as sleazy,
As I! Myself! The one they call Vyse.”

Dyne

“O get yourself going afore the ladybird cries!”

[exeunt Vyse with Kaleesha

Dyne

“And so it ends like every story,
Some of guts and some of glory,
Some may even come to bore thee.
But it be my utmost wish that this
Tale of nights, turns and twists
Hath entertained thee more then bore.
Perhaps one day there’ll be written more,
Of these modern days kings and queens.
Who so enrich our worldly scenes.”
