The tourqe happens way too high up the scale to be of any real use and the Toyota is left floundering if you ask for bootfuls of power at anything less than 5000RPM, it´s easy to have doubts about whether you´re in the sportiest Corolla or the diesel.
Just as despair sets in, the T-Sport grows horns as a band of demons steals its soul. The change in character as it comes on cam is so dramatic it shocks the fist time you experience it. As the tacho needle clips 6250RPM, there´s a sudden explosion of sound and energy and the engine note sheds its cloak of refinement and becomes snarly and hardcore, racer-like.
