Developers inside Apple report that “heavy trafficking” of pirated versions of Mac OS X may lead to increased security and authenticity measures in future versions of the Unix-based operating system.

The news comes as Mac OS 10.2 approaches a public release later next month.

“It has been pushed as a top priority,” comments one programmer.

Although exact measures are still being developed, at least one practice being discussed would require a unique serial number to be entered [only] after a fresh OS X install.

One primary concern, according to our source, is to maintain the “out-of-the-box ease of use” Apple is well-known for.

It's unlikely that such apparent measures will be visible in Jaguar.

“There definitely are increased anti-theft precautions in Jaguar, but they lay the ground work for future version more than anything else.”
